Week 18
An old friend from Darwin days asked me if I had any photos from inside the boat. I knew I did have, so I went searching. Only to make a nice discovery that Google has catalogued ALL my photos under various headings, such as "things", "places", photos I have "shared", and more.
Under "things" there were many more headings including "boat" - and there they were - all my boat photos in one place!
And so to my self-indulgence.... I decided to include some of my favourite boat and/or boating photos from over the years, and a couple of ring-ins.
(Just as an aside, our friend from Darwin, Maurice, used to have a boat called Iron Man - we had a few unforgettable days out on Darwin Harbour. (including Janny running aground on a sandbar). We also went out on Bob's catamaran. One day we were "attacked" by pirates hurling water filled balloons at us using a slingshot mounted on their boat!). Nice to dig up a few old memories.....
Blokzijl 2013. This out-of-the-way mooring is no longer available. Somebody built a house there!
Birdaard, 2014. Taken from the pub terrace, built out on the water!
Birdaard, showing the location of above photo.
Birdaard 2014, about 100 metres from where we used to live!
(at our ex-neighbour's place).
Ossenzijl, early morning
Drachten, early (winter) morning
Dokkum, 2014
De Leien, 2014
Moored at The Barge Inn, England. 2015. Prior to tackling the Caen Hill Flight.
Route Planning 2017
Not sure how far we'll get. We might enjoy the pub in Blokzijl and decide to stay!
We'll probably just make it up as we go along, but it should include Heerenveen to Blokzijl, then back to the Turf Route which will include Oldeberkoop, Donkerbroek, Gorredijk and then Aldeboarn on the way out.
Which brings me to one of my favourite photos, from even before I had a smartphone!
The Bridgekeeper at Aldeboarn, 2008. We've seen him again since, but I think his wife works the bridges now.
After Aldeboarn is Akkrum and then we'll make our way northwards towards Dokkum - we could easily get stuck there for a few days! Then along the Dokkumer Ee, past our old house in Birdaard and on to Leeuwarden. Time permitting, we could go along the Northern Elfstedentocht Route or the Bolswardertrekvaart and on to Sneek.
With Ivan and Louise in 2008. I always thought this was an interesting photo...replenishing supplies in Dokkum.
(this was a hire boat - now sold on to Air BnB in Amsterdam - so ours should be the only one around with the traditional green colour).
and a ring-in photo from Stuttgart, 2007
Around the farm
We dragged out the trampoline - first acquired around 2006 but little used in the last couple of years.
A new boy this weekend - he also built a "hut" in the forest - think we sent him home happy!
