Week 11 Whackamole

Week 11

Another slow week....although they somehow just keep rattling by! I'm late today because I had to catch up on the paperwork!
We had a taste of spring, but only for two days and then followed by a "normal" wet weekend.
We managed to do some pumpkin patch preparation.

This is what it looks like with the rain! Hope to avoid drowning everything this year.....

I also spent some time flattening out the mole hills...

Brother Ross sent me a link to a beaut story about English moles...

an excerpt....
"The idea of a professional who specialises in mole control can seem like a quaint relic from the past. In the 18th century mole-catchers were employed by every parish in England to keep the mole population under control. Catching these creatures required such skill that practitioners were remunerated more generously than surgeons. Mole-catchers zealously guarded their methods, divulging them only to their own children".

Last year, in France we discovered that the French will even take such extreme measures as blowing them up! It seemed too expensive at the time and we would always need to buy more supplies - but they are not availabe, or legal, in the The Netherlands.
A french advertisement...

and an in English discussion group...

"Had the same problem for nearly 8 years, best and latest trick was putting a little bit of dog poo down the holes, done this to every mole hill found on the land (12 acres), yes used up a lot of poo and it worked. No more Moles".

I do get a little help from Zoey. Maybe I could train her.......

Zoey and Possum (one of the cats) have both been known to catch moles. Janny's Dad used to be able to dig them out with a quick thrust of the shovel - after waiting and watching very quietly and patiently - usually around lunch time, he says!
He's too slow now - as are Zoey and Possum!

I even did some early mowing - this mower was brought with us from Oz. After 25 years it still starts 2nd time, every time. I have changed the spark plug ONCE - and then only because I thought I should!

Our elections......

All went OK..... and now comes the coalition forming. I rather like the idea that things are not always one way or the other: i.e. without the extremes. This means that they have to find some common ground if they want to have any say at all in the end result. On the downside, it takes a while for them to sort it out.

Friesland had 484 voting locations
In the Netherlands, 12.9 million could vote. 850,000 for the first time. Undecided voters not such a bad thing, says University of Amsterdam. They are generally taking time to better understand, rather than blindly following a particular choice.

We had a little discussion with our clients about voting. We weren't sure what arrangements are made for people with mental or physical handicaps, but in the newspaper the very next day there was this explanation.
18%of eligible voters have a light mental handicap (so many?) They may vote only if they can manage it alone. ie in the voting booth. Physically handicapped people may be helped into the booth.. Explanations can be given outside the booth. One of the biggest care organisations in Friesland produces a special client newspaper at election time, with simplified language.

At least we didn't get one of these...

Spring (Lente) is due on the 20th of March

The Weather Bureau

Spring doesn't always fall on the 21st of March. The date is important in calculating Easter. It is often thought that the date is the 21st. This is not the case. In the coming years up to and including 2101 "astromical" Spring doesn't start on the 21st, but on the 20th. In some years, namely 2044 and 2048, Spring will start on the 19th.

New bird boxes

Janny's parents say that they have many more birds here than at their last house.

Enjoying the sun!

Week 10 The King's Birthday

Week 10 The King's Birthday

Another slow week.... as in nothing out of the ordinary.
The weather ranged from fog, rain, more rain and then even a day when Janny's parents could sit outside and enjoy a cuppa in the sun!

As far as work goes, we now have our Work Experience lad for two days a week. It is gratifying to see that he has come along in leaps and bounds in the time he has been with us. I used to worry about having to tell him what to do all the time - that becomes tiring after a while - but now, he is gaining more independence and confidence to go about a few chores without me intervening. We're not sure what the future will bring - he may, in fact, become one of our clients. His teacher at school has also been providing guidance over the years - again good to see "the system" at work - trying to provide a meaningful place in society for one of its own.

When turning 21 is not such a big deal.....

Ben turns 21 soon - on the same day as the King has his 50th birthday! The King has "invited" people having a Jubilee birthday on the same day to share it with him. For some reason 21 is not included - just the 20, 30, 40, etc. years. I think there were 11,000 registrations, but I'm not sure how the "sharing" is going to be organised. 21 is a big deal to us, of course!

Around the farm....

About once a month, we have to do a BIG shopping for out the back. We went to Lidl this time..... but on a Sunday in Oosterwolde. The big shops in Drachten aren't allowed to open on Sundays due to the religious views of the controlling faction in the Local Government. Shopping was always a Friday thing and always hectic trying to get two shopping trolleys full. Sunday was nice and quiet for a change, and BTW this was €250,00.

My workshed is almost tidy.....it's probably 5 or 6 years since the last time I cleaned up!

Also removed all my tools to a sawdust free room at the side.

Some things take a while.... (cont.)

I finally finished the out-of-sight rear section of the chook shed It will also stop the sparrows having a free feed!

Every 2 months or thereabouts, we have the local Country Women's Cooking Club here to use our big kitchen. Last week's offerings......
fruit and yoghurt

quinoa and tuna

spinach and coconut soup

tuna salad

Should have bought the mole explosives........

Elections coming up...

My special agents in Greensborough and St. Kilda have been sending me information, in English...

Just sayin'...... I haven't seen any overt attempts at voter suppression (one can only ask how can such things be?). In fact, young people are being actively encouraged to "get out and vote". And..... we can still afford to pay our health insurance AND own an iPhone......

Declaration of Good Behaviour

Dienst Justis
Every few years, our personnel have to provide a "Declaration of Good Behaviour" (might have lost something in translation - but to do with NOT being a registered sex offender, for example). This is arranged via the Local Government in conjunction with the Ministry of Security and Justice. Janny and I also have to provide them - all part of the paperwork associated with our "Quality Hallmark".

More about Ben.....

He received notification that he achieved 30 "European Credits" for his study in Hong Kong - the credits are a means of evaluating recognition of value across different countries - 30 EC points was the target that he and the University set at the outset.

.... and in preparation for his 2 weeks course in Moscow, he has arranged accommodation at €12/13 per night.

Week 9 No Swaffelen!

Week 9

As we turn to March, boating season draws ever nearer.....
(as do pumpkin and mowing seasons).

Dutch Word of the Year 2008

Rather worryingly, this was brought to my attention by a future crew member (?!). I've told him it is definitely NOT allowed on board.

Swaffelen

A Postcard from Williamstown

Just to make me homesick!

(from Andrew and Terry, who have this view from their Williamstown apartment). The boat in the left foreground was designed, built and operated by a Dutchman!

WATERWAYS IN THE NETHERLANDS

(www.bureauvoorlichtingbinnenvaart.nl) also in English.

The total waterway network in the Netherlands covers some 5,046 km, of which 4,800 km is suitable for the shipment of goods. Together, the main transport axes and main waterways total some 1,400 km in length. The remaining waterways provide a total length of approximately 3,400 km. Waterways have long been in existence and are not only used for navigational purposes, but also for the drainage of water. They form a complete water system.

Due to its location at the mouth of several important European rivers such as the Rhine, the Maas and the Schelde, the Netherlands is the gateway to the European hinterland. In addition to these rivers, the numerous canals and lakes that connect the major cities provide the Netherlands with an excellent interconnected network for the waterborne transport of goods.

The Netherlands and water are thus inextricably linked. On the one hand, water forms a danger, whereby we - out of necessity - have become experts in water management. This is how we keep our feet dry. On the other hand, water provides great potential for waterborne transport. Water has been used in the Netherlands as a method of long-distance transport since early history. Today, inland shipping still continues to play a major role in transport.

Around the farm

Our second Syrian family moved to Gorredijk. A large 4 bedroom house. "Dad" has been laying floors, assembling furniture and much more, so they were almost ready when I delivered the last of their bikes.

Janny has been printing on her new plotter; takes a bit of getting used to but there is a large and helpful user community, on-line.

New overalls for some of the clients - the workers! The others will have shirts and sweaters.

Long overdue, but I have used some of our quiet time to tidy up my half of the workshed...one of the clients has the other half.

...and I've started preparing some seed boxes for the pumpkins!

We had so much rain during the week that even our drains started to "float".!

oh, and BTW, we both survived 25 years of marriage!

With cake and coffee to celebrate.... with the clients

Janny's sisters arranged for a local cartoonist to make the following, but with one glaring omission....

....and that is Ben, of course!....who is currently in Copenhagen visiting some friends he met in Hong Kong.
